Transplant Type - Heart
At age 21, after experiencing heart issues, Mimi was diagnosed with carcinoid syndrome cancer of the liver. This came as quite a shock, as it is a very rare form of cancer that doesn’t run in her family. After learning how advanced the disease was and thinking back on symptoms throughout the years, it is likely that she had been sick since she was 10. Doctors now say a heart transplant is critical to her survival.
During such a difficult time, Mimi is thankful for the loving support system surrounding her, especially her husband, Ian, who has been by her side through countless emergencies, sick days and too many close calls. As someone who has always loved to perform, her job as a standardized patient peer mentor has provided a unique creative outlet that allows her to help others by reenacting realistic patient/doctor encounters with medical students. She also loves helping at her favorite little book store, as well as knitting, which is meditative and doesn’t require too much energy. Mimi looks forward to being well enough to dive back into dancing, acting and singing. Being back on the stage and performing regularly would be a huge light at the end of her transplant journey. But right now, she needs your help.
The average heart transplant costs nearly $1 million. And that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Mimi will have to temporarily relocate 200 miles from her home to be near the hospital so she can be there as soon as possible when a donor match is found, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging.
